Here in New York City, we have had almost 50 consecutive days of beautiful sunshine. The temperatures have been a perfect 50 to 70 degrees each day. Some days you’d dress in short sleeves, and some days a sweater. The best Fall weather you could ask for, even with the occasional windy day.
Now, as we enter November, I find myself longing for a day of rain and cooler temps. (Not to mention we are currently in a drought warning.) I love the sunshine and have enjoyed these wonderful Autumn days, but when I look out my blinds in the morning, I feel a bit disappointed that it’s not cloudy and raining.
There’s something about a cool, rainy day that gives you permission to cozy up, to grab a blanket and a warm beverage, and slow down a bit. I know for those who have to brave the weather with umbrellas and raincoats for work, school, or errands, it’s not as enjoyable. But when you work from home, it can be. Let me explain: when you’re indoors on a gorgeous day, you feel like you should be outside enjoying it. When it’s cloudy or raining, you’re glad to be home. Of course, too much rain, and you’ll long for sunshine again. It’s funny how too much of a good thing isn’t always best for us. Too much rich food makes us crave a simple bowl of soup. Eating out too much leaves you longing for a home-cooked meal. After lots of events, holiday parties, and dressing up, you begin to appreciate the quiet beauty of lounging on your couch.
It reminds me of something I read in Ecclesiastes: "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." It goes on to contrast various phases of life, saying there is a time for it all. We need balance to shape our lives well. Another quote, one I’ve heard often, speaks to my desire for a little rain: “If it doesn’t rain sometimes, we wouldn’t appreciate the sun.” I need a little rain to make me appreciate this bright, beautiful sunshine again. How about you?
